Elmhurst, IL--Helping to meet the education needs of resellers and their customers, the LANDA Video Network has released its first video tape, entitled "Emerging Technology." Developed to serve as a cost-effective adjunct to classroom study and computer-based training for networking professionals, the tape uses a variety of educational techniques, including diagrams, actual products, flip charts and technical narration. The 64 minute, full-color VHS tape features three distinct segments with a review and summary at the conclusion of each part. Each of the tape segments was sponsored by a LANDA vendor-member. Sponsors for this first tape in the LANDA Video Network series were: SMC, IBM and Chipcom. The "Emerging Technology" tape is narrated by LANDA's own Howard Lubert, Chairman of the Education and Certification Committee. Lubert is Vice Chairman of LANDA and president of HEL, Inc., a Philadelphia-based value-added reseller specializing in systems integration and training. In Part I of the "Emerging Technology" tape, Steve Schmid, Marketing Manager for Ethernet Products at SMC, thoroughly discusses 10Base-T, the new standard that enhances classical Ethernet. Part I also details how access protocols work, takes a look at transmission rates and hardware, examines topology progression, discusses how to build larger Ethernet networks, and details the network management benefits of using 10Base-T topology. Token Ring networks, as defined by IEEE Standard 802.5, are highlighted in Part II of the LANDA video. Dan Love, PS/2 Networking Manager for IBM, examines the benefits of Token passing including: a high number of users, a high volume of data traffic, and stable response time. Love discusses the adapter card and tests that it performs. He also talks about Token Ring adapter card self-diagnostic tests that check memory and circuitry, and the advantages of source routing - including decisions on issues such as best path and maximum frame size. Also explained in this second segment in the LANDA video are Token Ring network management functions, and connections of Token Ring to Ethernet, backbone ring connectivity, and host devices using Token Ring adapters. In the final segment of the LANDA video, Frank Fuller, Senior Product Manager for Chipcom, examines issues in facility networking. Fuller addresses network growth topics including the addition of Token Ring or FDDI to Ethernet networks in the future and the area of cost containment. Also given is an overview of the history of networking. Fuller then examines the intelligent wiring hub, or smart hub, as the delivery vehicle for networks of the 90's - including its capabilities and network management potential. To order a copy of the "Emerging Technology" video, send a check or money order for $20 (LANDA members only) or $60 (non-members) to: LANDA, 360 W. Butterfield Rd., Suite 110, Elmhurst, IL 60126. (The order must identify whether you are a reseller, distributor or manufacturer, and whether you are a LANDA member or non-member.) LANDA, the trade association for the network industry, currently has over 1,300 reseller, distributor and manufacturer member organizations. +---------------------------------------------------------------+ | From the America On-Line & PC-Link New Product Info Services | +===============================================================+ | This information was processed with OmniPage Professional OCR | | software (from Caere Corp) & a Canon IX-30 scanner from data | | provided by the above mentioned company.
